Nine years after completing four mosaic and terra cotta panels, amounting to over 300 square feet of mural area, The Catholic Cemeteries of Chicago asked us to put together an idea for an exterior 10 by 30 foot mosaic mural for their new LEED certified building in the All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines. We suggested the theme of “The Holy Family” and designed a sketch in which Saint Joseph, a master carpenter, is teaching the boy Jesus to saw a piece of wood, while the Virgin Mary, his mother, looks on. This idea was well received and we were given the thumbs up to continue with the production of the mural.The figurative work was done using Venetian glass mosaic, while the background was completed in colorful glazed tiles.
Another project we designed for the same LEED building was a stained glass window depicting “The Death of St. Joseph”. This was accomplished in a combination of antique and opalescent glass, with the flesh areas depicted using the traditional technique of painting the glass. The final window panel is located above an interior passage within the building and is illuminated with artificial lighting.
