All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, IL9 years after completing 4 panels made of Mosaic and Terra Cotta amounting to over 300 square feet of mural area, The Catholic Cemeteries of Chicago asked us to put together an idea for an exterior 10 by 30 feet mural for their new LEED certified building at the same Cemetery in Des Plaines. We suggested the theme to be “The Holy Family” and designed a sketch in which Saint Joseph, a master carpenter, is teaching Jesus, as a boy, to saw a piece of wood while the Virgin Mary, his mother, is witnessing this event. They liked the idea and gave us the thumbs up to continue with its production.
The figurative work was done using Venetian Glass Mosaic and the background completed in colorful glazed tiles.
Another project we designd for the same LEED building was a stained glass window depicting “The death of St. Joseph”. This was accomplished in a combination of antique and opalescent glass. The flesh areas were depicted using the traditional stained glass technique of painting the glass. This window panel is located above an interior passage and illuminated with artificial lighting.
